Word Counter

Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and estimate reading time from any text.

The Word Counter is a text analysis tool that provides instant statistics about your content: word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count, paragraph count, and estimated reading time. Paste or type your text, and all metrics update in real-time.

This is essential for writers, students, and content creators who work with character limits — social media posts, meta descriptions, academic submissions — or need to estimate how long a piece will take to read. The reading time estimate uses the standard 200 words-per-minute average.

Why this matters

Character and word limits are everywhere. Twitter/X has 280 characters. Google meta descriptions cap at ~155. Academic abstracts often require 150–300 words. Instead of counting manually or pasting into Google Docs just for a word count, this tool gives you everything at a glance.

How it works

The tool parses your input text in real-time using straightforward string operations — splitting on whitespace for words, splitting on sentence-ending punctuation for sentences, and splitting on double newlines for paragraphs. Character counts are computed both with and without spaces so you can reference whichever metric your use case requires.

Highlights

  • Word, character, sentence, and paragraph counting
  • Character count with and without spaces
  • Reading time estimation at 200 WPM
  • Real-time updates as you type
  • Zero dependencies beyond React and Shadcn UI
